Overview[1]

Ureteral cancer is usually an upper-tract urothelial carcinoma arising from the ureter lining.

Pathology and biology[2]

It shares carcinogen-related field effects with bladder cancer, and Lynch syndrome is an important inherited association in selected patients.

Clinical presentation[3]

Haematuria is common; obstruction may produce flank pain, hydronephrosis or infection.

Diagnosis and staging[4]

CT urography, cystoscopy, selective cytology and ureteroscopy with biopsy define site, grade and extent.

Management principles[5]

Kidney-sparing endoscopic or segmental treatment is considered for suitable low-risk lesions; higher-risk disease often requires nephroureterectomy plus risk-adapted systemic therapy.
